Lately I’ve been itching to get back into reading. Even in the age of the iPads and Kindles, there’s nothing quite like picking up a hardback book and escaping reality for even just an hour. I recently reconnected with some friends of mine from college who I took a creative writing class with and we all realized how little time there has been for reading for pleasure, let alone reading fiction. There’s something about thumbing through a novel that is just so satisfying. I’ve also been into a lot of non-fiction lately.
Anyhow, here are some books I picked up recently that I can’t wait to crack open.
Kitchens of the Great Midwest
J. Ryan Stradal
I’ve been anxious for a while to read this book about a girl from the Midwest who grows up to become a superstar chef while learning unique lessons along the way. Sounds a like a solid foodie coming of age story to me!
Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
About a dysfunctional family living in New York. I’m excited to read this one with its family drama and witty humor.
Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish
This book written by a former SeaWorld trainer is a must read for anyone who was a fan of the documentary, Blackfish.
The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon’s Last Uncontacted Tribes
The Unconquered is a book I have yet to finish but that I started when I went to Brazil last year. It’s about the expedition to document and learn more about one of the last uncontacted tribes on Earth in order to protect them and their ecosystem from the outside world.
Sequel to the novel, White Girl Problems. If you like funny, I’ll leave it at that.
